~ The New Year’s Eve Magic of Oldies Club ~

Jasper Bear’s New Year’s Eve story is some years old now, but a very precious and personal one for me. It was just before New Year that year when an old dog was taken to a vets to be put to sleep. He wasn’t a sick dog whose time had come. He was a dog separated, we were told, from his doggie companion and his ill human, and left at the vets by relatives. His story may have ended there, but it turned out that the universe had other plans for Jasper. The vets were due to close for New Year but, instead of sending Jasper to Rainbow Bridge, they contacted Oldies Club the day before New Year’s Eve to ask if we could help.

Jasper’s new life began that New Year’s Eve when he left the vets and came to join our family as an ‘emergency foster’ for a night, until he could be moved to the originally intended foster home, since circumstances had prevented them from travelling to collect him as first planned. It transpired though that fate had already brought Jasper to exactly where he was meant to be and he soon became a ‘foster failure’ and the newest member of his forever family. He slotted in extremely well and, while his time with us was not long enough – it never is, is it? – he quickly became a very happy, settled and oh-so-loved member of the family.

The photo on the left shows Jasper on New Year’s Day, the day after coming into Oldies Club foster care, when he was a very sad and confused old boy. The photo on the right is Jasper a few months later, looking healthier, happier and, I have always felt, younger! The magic of Oldies Club indeed!

Jasper made his way to the Bridge some years ago now, when it really was his time, sadly, and is always missed and loved very much. I am forever thankful that Oldies Club was in a position to bring him into its care that New Year’s Eve and I’m sure Jasper was too. I am sharing his story once more, in the hope that some of you will make a donation to our Winter Appeal – CLICK HERE – to help ensure Oldies Club remains able to help other dogs like Jasper this winter and in the coming months.

Please support the Winter Appeal by donating whatever you can afford, from £2 upwards, and help older dogs smile again.

Thank you x
